It is a story that takes place in a time and place when women had little or no choices in their life and they generally were only expected to be wives and mothers. The following paper examines the character development of Nora, the woman in Ibsens tale. Nora In the beginning of the story Nora is a simple woman, and is almost seen as a child. We see this primarily in her actions and in the way her husband treats her. In the first chapter of the work we see her husband come home and ask her, "Is it my little squirrel bustling about?" and Nora replies excitedly it seems, "Yes!" (Ibsen). She has been busy with home details and with the simple things that wives, with maids, did in her time period. She begs her husband to spend more money this year with Christmas because they have enough now and dont need to always scrimp, but she asks in a very childish and timid manner, acting childish when he says no, stating "pooh!" (Ibsen). Nora is scolded for eating sweets and she easily succumbs to this treatment by her husband because she is essentially immersed in her role. But, as the story develops we begin to wonder if all of these characteristics of being childish have only been an act because she believes that is how she is supposed to act. As the story progresses Nora becomes more and more obviously intelligent, and one must perhaps question if she sudeenly got more intelligent or she is slowly realizing that she cannot live the role of a little "songbird" any more if she wants to have a life, an identity, and not ...
