Tragedy of Othello. In many ways, he is the Bards most intriguing creation, for he appears completely lacking in conscience, motivated solely by evil. Iagos intention to destroy
Othellos life fuels all of the plays action, for it is his manipulation of Othello, which results in the Moorish generals precipitous descent into jealousy, rage, and murder. Othello
may be the protagonist for whom the play is named, but Iago is the catalyst who is responsible for the plays tragic elements. Iago is Commander Othellos junior military officer,
and when he is overlooked for a promotion to lieutenant, he is seething with anger. His importance to the play is demonstrated when he is introduced in the opening
scene of Act I, even prior to Othellos first appearance. Before his lone confidant, Roderigo, Iago licks his wounds and states in a self-pitying tone, "In personal suit to
make me his lieutenant, / Off-cappd to him; and, by the faith of man, / I know my price, I am worth no worse a place. / But he, as
loving his own pride and purposes, / Evades them, with a bumbast circumstance / Horribly stuffd with epithets of war, / And, in conclusion, / Nonsuits my mediators; for, Certes,
says he, / I have already chose my officer. / And what was he? / Forsooth, a great arithmetician, / One Michael Cassio, a Florentine / (A fellow almost damnd
