the citys tragic former ruler, and sister to Eteocles and Polynices, the warring brothers who brought civil war to the city and killed each other in battle. Sophocles frames
Creons characterization, first of all, within the framework of his decree concerning funeral rites for the two brothers, which indicates his propensity towards narrow-mindedness and then in his reactions to
Antigone; Tiresias, the blind prophet; and Haemon, is son and Antigones fianc?. Exploration of Sophocles characterization of Creon underscores the centrality of the issue of state versus religion to the

to this sage, and how the brothers had agreed to share the throne, each ruling for a period with the other brother succeeding to the throne on an appointed date.
