would become the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The younger generation of African Americans would not relinquish their seats on the bus for anyone and refused to settle
for the lowest rung on the socioeconomic ladder in white America. They wanted to define themselves in image of their African ancestors by embracing their cultural identity. In
the play, twenty-year-old Beneatha Younger symbolizes this strong-willed and independent generation. In her stage directions, Hansberry describes Beneatha as "about twenty... slim and intense... her lean, almost intellectual face
has a handsomeness of its own" (543). Beneatha has uncompromising standards regarding life and relationships, and uses her intellect to take an insightful perspective on the world around her.
It becomes apparent as soon as Beneatha Younger takes the stage that she is different from the other members of her family - Mama Lena, brother Walter Lee Jr., his
wife Ruth, and their son Travis - in that she is her visions expand far beyond the walls of their Southside Chicago home. She announces confidently, "Im going to
be a doctor," and she is not about to allow circumstances or convention prevent her from achieving her goals (Hansberry 550). Her name is ironic in that Beneatha is
beneath no one in her family. Her intellect and her passion for knowledge are unsurpassed. She is a unique type of African American female for the time -
independent and in no hurry to marry. Beneatha wants to establish her own identity, and not rely upon a husband to provide one for her. Her Nigerian boyfriend
