five short stories and gives a reaction as well. Discussion Last Night by James Salter: There are three main characters: Walter Such, his wife Merit and their friend Susanna, who
is also Walters lover. The most interesting character is Merit, who shows great strength and determination as she prepares for her own death. Salter uses her as a means of
exploring the human longing for the past, in a scene when she talks about her home. The home she shares with Walter is not the most important to her, but
the home where she grew up; where she watched winter storms from a window on the landing; where her father bent over her "to say good night, the lamplight in
which her mother was holding out a wrist, trying to fasten a bracelet" (Salter). These memories are far more vivid than any she has built with Walter, and Salter may
be suggesting that our real strength comes not from any relationships we make in adulthood, but the values that are instilled in us as children. Like/Dislike: Merit is the
most likeable character in the story. Shes strong and courageous, though readers who hold fundamental religious beliefs will probably not agree with her decision to commit suicide. Others, who dont
understand why anyone should have to suffer intolerable pain when theyre going to die anyway, will feel great sympathy for her. Agree/Disagree: Whether or not someone agrees with her
actions is quite likely to be based on their religious sensibilities and their opinion about physician-assisted suicide. There are arguments against it, often based on religion or concerns about inadequate
safeguards; the argument for it is simply that someone who is terminally ill and in unbearable pain should have the right to end their own suffering. Reaction: The story is
