is she is completely insane. Therefore, her character also demonstrates the nature of her delusions. In relating Miss Emilys character, Faulkner also calls into question the values of the small
Southern town that allowed the domination of her father and provided the stress that ultimately drove this woman to homicide. Emilys story is told in flashbacks by the narrator,
a townsperson who is relating this gossip and the way in which the town regarded the Grierson family. Therefore, all that the reader knows of Emilys girlhood is that her
father drove away every possible suitor who ever came to the door. Her "slender figure" in the background, with her fathers silhouette in front of her, holding a horsewhip and
barring the doorway is how the townspeople recall her fathers dominance over her (Faulkner). The turning point in Emilys life is when her father dies, as she refuses to
acknowledge his death, insisting on keeping his body and pretending him to be alive for a period of three days. When she finally relents, allowing her fathers burial, this loss
causes a breakdown. Faulkner mentions that her great-aunt went "completely crazy," so the reader knows that insanity runs in Emilys family. In understanding Emilys situation, it is important to note
that a womans association with a man is what defined women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet, Emily was left alone, and also destitute, as her father
had no estate to leave her, other than their home. As her story is told out of chronological order, the beginning of the story, which demonstrates both Emilys class consciousness
