"character" in multiple ways, one of which is that this word refers to "mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual." The American Heritage Dictionary states its definition slightly differently, but has a comparable definition, which reads: "A description of a persons attributes, traits or abilities." Websters New World Dictionary lists this definition of "character" as number 7 out of 16 definitions and says that "character" is "the pattern of behavior or personality found in an individual or group." Looking a these definitions, they all have common features. They suggest that our "character" is not simply who we feel ourselves to be, but, more importantly, it is how we are perceived by others. In other words, "character" is who we think we are, who other people think we are, and what we think of other people. Everyone has a sense of who they think they are, that is, how they perceive their own character. However, as each persons individual reality is filtered through the prism of their own experiences, senses, and memories, it is impossible to truly know precisely what is going on inside someone elses head. While we imagine ourselves to be a certain way and to have a certain character, it is also quite likely that we are quite inept at conveying our personal perception to others. A young guy, for example, may imagine himself to be the most sophisticated of lovers to ever hit the singles bars, yet he comes across as uncouth and gauche to the women he hits on. as this suggests, in conjunction with our sense of identity, we imagine ourselves to be a whole a list of adjectives, good and bad.
