annihilation over political ideologies is the stuff of fiction, as indeed filmmaker Stanley Kubrick pointed out in his hilarious satire, Dr. Strangelove, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and
Love the Bomb. But the struggle was much more nuanced than is generally realized; not only did the U.S. and U.S.S.R. go head-to-head over politics, much of the contest was
a struggle for economic advantage. It was played out over four decades on stages all over the world and sometimes took the form of confrontation, as in the Cuban Missile
Crisis; but sometimes too involved apparent cooperation. It was forty years of nerve-wracking tension that has not yet fully dissipated. The chapter points out that one of the areas of
the world where the interests of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. were in conflict was in the Middle East, with its enormous oil reserves. The United States interest in the Arabian
Peninsulas oil had more to do with preserving its advantage over other nations, including its developed allies, than it did with supply oil to Americans. The Soviet Union entered into
alliances with nations such as Iraq and Egypt even though the Communist party was not in evidence there. The alliances were strategic, to give the U.S.S.R. a presence in the
region to counteract the American influence. The two nations also differed in their interest in the geography of the Middle East. The Soviet Union was concerned about its southern
border, which it shared with unstable nations like Turkey and Afghanistan; the U.S. however was concerned with the Arab nations and particularly with Israel. The chapter goes into greater detail
about the influence of the two superpowers in the Middle East, since it has echoes for us today. The Cold War had a number of phases as it pertains to
