It is a novel that can be interpreted from many different directions as it relates to social or philosophical issues. In light of this it stands as a classic that
is still being interpreted and analyzed today. The following paper examines one particular part in the Melvilles novel. The paper also discusses some of what transpires before Chapter 30 in
order to better understand the chapter under discussion. (The student should note that they requested a discussion of Chapter 29 which supposedly began with the lines "Some few weeks after
the execution...." Chapter 30 is the chapter with these opening lines and thus is the chapter being discussed). Chapter 30 Prior to discussing other aspects of the story
that can be related to this particular chapter we look at the opening lines of this chapter, which are the focus of this particular essay. The lines are as follows:
"Some few weeks after the execution, among other matters under the head of News from the Mediterranean, there appeared in a naval chronicle of the time, an authorized weekly publication,
an account of the affair. It was doubtless for the most part written in good faith, tho the medium, partly rumor, through which the facts must have reached the writer,
served to deflect and in part falsify them" (Melville). Now at first look these lines appear to be nothing that would indicate the need for any further discussion. They
are factual lines that simply seem to carry the story along, informing us of what happened after an execution. But, the matter of fact presentation is the most important element
presented by Melville. If we have read Billys story closely and if his story has made us think and analyze the story we see these lines as a sad realistic
