A major difference between clergy at a church and chaplains is that chaplains serve people who may believe in a different doctrine. A chaplain may follow the Catholic doctrine, for
example, while those he or she serves may be Lutheran, Methodist, Jewish, and so forth. Chaplains approach their service from a spiritual base rather than a doctrinal base. We
all know how comforting chaplains can be to the troops in a combat zone and anyone who has been hospitalized or whose loved ones were seriously ill know how comforting
the hospital chaplain can be. By following in the footsteps of Jesus, chaplains serve everyone without judgment of anyones religious beliefs. It is this that provides the strongest theological foundation
for chaplaincy. Chaplaincy is a very important job. It is a special mission and ministry that demands a great deal of those who practice. Chaplaincy Chaplains come
from all denominations and all religions. There are at least 10,000 chaplains in the United States providing services in numerous settings (NACC, 2011). Some were in other occupations before they
became chaplains thus, they come from different backgrounds. They often say they are chaplains because they want to make a difference in the lives of people who face serious challenges.
This group says that the criteria for being a good chaplain are compassion and caring. The NACC (2011) also writes that chaplains provide pastoral and spiritual care to many
