In order to survive and thrive organization have to adapt and change, developing their internal competences in line with the environment and the needs of that environment. It may be argued that this type of environment may be challenging, but it can also be stimulating and aid with innovations and organizational development. One approach to this is the use of Chaos Theory in the way organization development takes place. In considering what value Chaos Theory can be to the study of organization change the first stage is to define Chaos Theory and consider how it may manifest. Chaos theory appears to be diametrically opposed to any of the more commonly studied prescriptive schools, such as Mintzbergs positioning school. Under Chaos theory the use of a traditional prescriptive model would be doomed; change attained by the logical analysis of information collecting and gathering before implementing would be bound to fail as all environments are in a constant state of flux. The name chaos theory projects certain perceptions of disorganization and dynamic uncontrollable change. However, it can be argued that the term Chaos Theory is a misnomer Overman (1996) describes the theory as "The key words are complex and dynamic, so complex and so dynamic, in fact, as to appear chaotic" (Overman, 1996; 487). Therefore, it is an appearance to total chaos, but it does not mean it is chaotic and devoid of predictability or value in terms of proactively managing change where it is used as a basis for organizational change.
