warfare. THE CHANGING WARS In World War I one of the greatest fighting techniques was that of trench warfare. The battle of Verdun began with nine long hours
of "fierce bombardment," (The Battle of Verdun, 2002, PG) the likes of which had never been witnessed before. France took a hit to their troops that knocked huge holes
in their line; they were no match for the intensity of force or type of artillery -- the rapid "tut-tut-tut" of the machine guns -- employed by the German army.
Flame-throwers were also introduced in this battle, something the French troops had no idea how to handle (The Battle of Verdun, 2002, PG). The battle of Verdun was unique
in its makeup mainly because of its location. A city positioned on the river Meuse, it was encircled by "steep concentric hills." (The Battle of Verdun, 2002, PG).
The advantage of these hills was their ability to provide substantial fortresses that could provide the French with a strong sense of protection. However, this comfort zone was the
downfall of their trenches and communication, both of which were "completely neglected." (The Battle of Verdun, 2002, PG). It is easy to see that even within the scope of one
war the geography and the type of battles that are faced are of incredible importance. Imagine then, the difference that came about between World War II, and Desert Storm.
The geography was completely difference and the technology was almost so different as to be unrecognizable. World War II was fought mostly in hand-to-hand combat, with air combat as
