received but in e-commerce, a great deal of information processing is accomplished automatically (Mahmood, 2005). The ability of technology to automatically transfer and process information reduces the need for paper
(Mahmood, 2005); it also reduces the need to have as many people working to deal with that information. Historically, accountants have been responsible to gathering significant amounts of data and
processing that data into information (Mahmood, 2005). The results have been numerous paper reports created and distributed by accountants to managers or whomever needed the report (Mahmood, 2005). Within that
job has always been the responsibility of putting "in place systems that capture the data in business transactions inherent to that information" (Mahmood, 2005). These have always been the two
major roles of accountants. They are complex roles that demand talent, ongoing knowledge development and time. Information technology has changed the way accountants work over the years (Messmer, 2003). Technology
has given accountants new tools to perform their responsibilities more easily and more accurately (Messmer, 2003). E-commerce is adding new roles for accountants. Mahmood (2005) comments that because of advancing
technology, accountants must often take an active role in: * Providing other information to managers that goes beyond financial data. An example could be providing information on buying trends or
the how well their e-commerce endeavors are working (Mahmood, 2005). * Advising clients about information technology and e-commerce systems. This is especially true in small and medium-sized businesses who do
