employees must choose to behave differently for the purpose of re-creating the company culture. It is not easy to change the organizations culture (Duncanson, 2004). In fact, most theorists say that the corporate culture will not change unless the organization is threatened and/or someone exerts extreme leadership (Duncanson, 2004). To make a change can take two, three or more years (Duncanson, 2004). With the company described, Bryant Materials Company, since it was so near to bankruptcy, it will be more open to making the changes necessary to become a functional company. Further, bringing in a consultant to act as a change agent will provide the momentum needed to make the necessary changes. The first thing that must happen, however, is for everyone in the company to know and understand what is going to happen. That means communication between and among all levels of the hierarchy, beginning with the CEO explaining to employees that change must occur or the company will fold. Culture changes through both management and mechanisms (Duncanson, 2004). Mechanisms include tools and guides; tools are things like a mission statement and guides are things like instructions and manuals, such as codes of conduct (Duncanson, 2004). Other critical factors are knowing what the existing culture is and what the desired culture is (Duncanson, 2004). The objective then is to fill in the gap between what is and what should be (Duncanson, 2004). You can then create a culture map - what to change, how to change and how to measure the change (Duncanson, 2004). The what to change part could include vision and mission statements, goals, objectives, identity and even a description of the culture one wants to create (Duncanson, 2004).
