industry and technology. It was a period of rebirth where all things old and predictable became new and inspiring. Those who participated in the Crusades had several motives
on the journey that spanned the course of two centuries. Among their many quests was the intent to liberate the arts in such a way as to impart significance
upon the artistic and literary world that had not previously existed. A particularly crucial element of the Crusaders influence upon art and literature is the fact that their very
presence was responsible for uncovering a considerable amount of the "lost learning of ancient Greece" (Elson 16), which Arab sages had previously translated. This was especially important in that
such rediscovery led to a "revival of classical learning" (Elson 16), otherwise known as the Renaissance period - a time of expression and artistic endeavor like never before.
Gothic style, which was extremely popular during the earl Renaissance, relates to a multitude of styles, including cathedral structures, art, sculpture, glass works, decorative pieces
and illuminated composition from the twelfth through the sixteenth century. The term Gothic was not coined as flattery, but rather used as a disparaging expression of art and architecture
during the Renaissance. Taddeo Di Bartolos Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist and St Andrew (1395) and Madonna and Child (circa 1400), serve as a good representation
