This is not the only industry that has changed of course. Other industries have gone through major shifts. Factories have undergone changes during the industrial revolution and those in the
garment industry have seen enormous variations in fashion and in how clothing is manufactured. Today, with globalization, sneakers for example may be comprised of a variety of parts made throughout
the world, and there is always talk that some merchandize is made by third world children. Of course, the PC industry specifically has very much been an American phenomenon, although
parts are often manufactured abroad. Still, the advent of the industry and the Internet that seems to go along with it, is very much an American phenomenon and as a
result has created billionaires overnight. Indeed, the industry has been good for the economy. Canter (2005) writes: "In the PC industry, the period in which growth rates and stock prices
were the most volatile was also the period in which technological change was the most radical" (p.37). Of course, this does make sense. The author goes on to say
that the observation only holds true for the relative rates of growth since the period of radical change (Canter, 2005). The period of radical growth was between 1995 and 2000
(Canter, 2005). The surge in entry occurred much earlier between 1974 and 1984 (Canter, 2005). Mazzucato (2002 as cited in Canter, 2005) notes that the PC industry came from a
pre-existing industry, or the mainframe industry, where IBM was the inside leader and thus was able to have control over innovation and market share for close to twenty years time
(Canter, 2005). The monopoly that IBM enjoyed would disappear (Canter, 2005). This change is attributable to Intels introduction of the 386 chip during 1985, the advent of Windows in 1990
