about an area that was simply associated with oil production and little else. But the region has a culture and a flavor all its own. During the Gulf War, much was learned about military capability. The fact that the United States intercepted upwards of 33 Iraqi Scud missiles ("The Week" 23), with the use of the Patriot, provided support for the fact that America was the all powerful nation it was always thought to be. While there have been many claims of victory, along with those were challenges. Professor Ted Postol, for example, pointed out that even careful CNN watchers could see that some of the Patriots alleged hits were clear misses (23). The infamous Stealth fighter also came under intense scrutiny as people said that it really only showed a 60% accuracy, and not 90% as claimed (23). Thus, it is somewhat uncertain as to just how credible the reporting on the state of American technology is. Although there are varying reports today, and disagreements in terms of whether the United States is prepared for a real high tech war or not, a more important question perhaps is what has happened in the Gulf. Are gulf nations such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia up to par in terms of its defense systems or are they backwards and vulnerable to attack? What has happened in the course of nearly a decade since the Gulf War? Are gulf countries better off now, the same, or not as capable? First, it helps to look at the countries in the gulf individually.
