about the tragic ending. This paper discusses the changes both in Othello and in the relationship. Discussion One of the defining things about the play is its title: Othello, the
Moor of Venice. Othello is black, the only non-white character in the play and although he is undoubtedly brave and a recognized military leader, he has a great many enemies.
In fact, the play opens with Iago explaining how much he hates Othello, and that he remains in his service only to harm him. Even worse, Desdemonas father, Brabantio, complains
to the Duke, saying that his daughter is "... abusd, stoln from me, and corrupted / By spells and medicine bought of mountebanks; / For nature so prepostrously to err
/ (Being not deficient, blind, or lame of sense) / Sans witchcraft could not" (I.iii.60-64). In other words, only witchcraft could have induced Desdemona to marry Othello. Desdemona and Othello
married for the simplest of reasons: they love each other. But their love will not last the lies and schemes brought against it. Many critics have argued that the play
should have been called Iago, since he is the prime architect of the changes that ruin Othello and damn the marriage. However, despite the fact that he is a fascinating
character, Iago is also difficult to grasp, because he has no motivation that we can find to do what he does. It appears that he sets out to destroy a
good man simply because he can. He gives us two reasons: first, that Othello gave the promotion Iago wanted to Cassio instead; second, that Othello and Iagos wife were lovers.
