there were families and individuals that fell outside of the standard nuclear family of Mom, Dad and two to three kids living in a single family dwelling. However, family complexity
and variety existed in the "dim fringes" of social awareness and were considered deviant to the norm (Skolnick and Skolnick, 2003). While the old paradigm is no longer applicable, new
ones are still in flux. Economic realities dictate that a woman can no longer count on a man to provide for herself and their children. While there are still "mens
jobs" and "womens jobs," the womens movement has ensured that it is no longer possible to automatically assume that the former is better paid or more secure than the latter
(Luker, 2003). On the other hand, a world of perfect gender equality does not yet exist. While women take on many of the responsibilities of men, men rarely assume equal
responsibility for child-rearing or housekeeping duties traditionally assigned to women (Luker, 2003). To complicate things still further, roughly half of all marriages end in divorce (Luker, 2003). In an effort
to stem the rising tide of divorce, however, alternative patterns to formal marriage, such as cohabitation and informal arrangements do not work if dysfunctional communication patterns are established. The changing
