these people experience many problems as a result of these changes. Many of those problems relate to poor government policies, policies that had their origin soon after initial contact
between native and non-native. This is very concerning given that the Canadian government, in effect, is responsible for overseeing the lives of approximately 800,000 aboriginal peoples (Purvis 3).
The oversight that has been provided, however, is obviously inadequate if not contributory to the many problems being faced by these people. There is no denying the fact that
Canadian Indian policy has been myopic and oppressive and the relationship between the Canadian government and the indigenous peoples that eventually fell within its jurisdiction has been a rocky one
(Comeau and Santin 7). This relationship has been complicated by geographical, historical, political, constitutional, cultural and even racial considerations (Comeau and Santin 7). These complications extend back to
the very first interactions between Native and non-Native. The argument might be presented, in fact, that the current problems being experienced by Canadas First Nation Peoples relate directly to
their loss of self sufficiency. This loss has occurred directly in relation to two very important impacts resulting from ongoing contact with those European peoples that ultimately came to
represent Canadas majority. These impacts are 1. an almost complete change in the material culture of First Nations people as a result of a growing dependence on items
provided by European cultures, and 2. the loss of First Nations land. To understand just how dramatically Canadas first peoples have been impacted by the interaction with the non-natives
