As such the history of the people of this region serve to offer us an incredibly opportunity to understand some almost prehistoric conditions that led to change and adaptation of one kind or another as it relates to cultures. With the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia we have somewhat simple people who heavily populated a region and were essentially strong in their culture until the arrival of the Persians and then the Greeks, and then later in history many more peoples. In the following paper we examine the culture(s) of this region prior to Persian and Greek influence. The paper then discusses how the region changed culturally, politically, and economically with the arrival and influence of the foreigners. The Region in Ancient History We first begin with a discussion of the Lebanon people of ancient history, for these were a people located almost completely in the middle of the region being discussed. The people most heavily influenced by the changes that would come were titled Phoenicians by the Greeks. "The area now known as Lebanon first appeared in recorded history around 3000 B.C. as a group of coastal cities and a heavily forested hinterland. It was inhabited by the Canaanites, a Semitic people, whom the Greeks called Phoenicians because of the purple (phoinikies) dye they sold. These early inhabitants referred to themselves as men of Sidon or the like, according to their city of origin, and called the country Lebanon" (Library of Congress, 1987). Like many people in the region, the environment was one that heavily relied on the sea due to its location on the coast.
