- 40 years have impacted on many areas of life; one is the way in which patients and medical professionals communicate with each other. To assess these influences the social,
political and technological issues can all be considered separately. However, it should be remembered that these factors are likely to be interdependent and interact in their influence. 2. Social
Influences A key social change in the way communications take place and the style of communications reflects the shift in the class system in the UK. There has been
a gradual movement away from the dominant paternalistic approach that was seen in the 1960s and 1970s towards increased patient empowerment seen in the twenty-first century (Anonymous, 2011, p95). During
the 1960s and 1970s there was a high level of deference shown to professionals such as doctors. The doctors were seen as upper class, it was assumed that because they
had knowledge and training they would know what was best. At this time doctors would often dictate their orders, with patient and staff alike complying unquestioningly. This impacted on
the style of communications which was paternal; in the style of parent to child, as well as often resulting in only limited information being given to the patient by the
doctor. Anecdotal evidence from those who were patients at the time remember important doctors who they felt they should not disturb or question due to their lesser importance; deference to
the status of the doctors. Over the years there has been a gradual change, which as resulted in change in the class system which has eroded the
former deference received by doctors. Effectively doctors do not get the same unquestioning respect and have found themselves increasing accountable to their patients for the decisions they make. One
