Discussion The student will want to discuss the most important changes, but realize that they impacted almost every area of American society. Fortunately, a number of texts cover these years,
and one summarizes the period nicely for us. It will be our reference. The years 1877-1900 lie between the end of Reconstruction and the beginning of the Progressive Era (Carlton,
2001); perhaps the most startling development at the time was the rise of the cities (Chapter 19: Toward an Urban Society, 1877-1900, 2005; hereafter "Chapter 19, 2005"). The new machine
age led to new factories and other industrialization, which took place in the cities (Chapter 19, 2005). The cities thus "became a symbol of American life and people flocked to
it, drawn by the hope of economic opportunity and the promise of a more exciting life" (Chapter 19, 2005). New technologies such as elevators and streetcars, to say nothing of
skyscrapers, enabled the cities to grow "upward and outward" (Chapter 19, 2005). That is, new construction methods allowed the construction of buildings much taller than ever before; people could reach
the upper floors because of the new elevator systems; and the streetcars meant that people could make their way throughout the metropolis. But another change came with the technological innovations;
the cities were no longer small enough to be "walking cities" (Chapter 19, 2005). In addition, in a move that we still see today, the "middle class moved out" as
working class people and immigrants moved in, "creating urban slums through overcrowding" (Chapter 19, 2005). Thus, cities produced "what was an increasingly stratified and fragmented society" (Chapter 19, 2005). The
