foster homes for a short duration while the parents undergo rehabilitation. Once rehabilitated, the children can be returned to their homes and reunited with their families. This is a great
concept. In theory, it should work. However, the reality is light-years removed from the theory. The reality is that many children spend years in foster care, rather than months. The
reality is that the children are very often uprooted from their communities and placed in completely new localities so far away that their families have no opportunity to visit them.
The reality is that screening for foster families is often inadequate and the children simply go from one abusive environment to another. And the reality is that siblings are very
often separated and sent to live in different homes in different areas. These three points are the focus of an area of reform being instituted in the foster care system
across the country. No one who has not experienced a childhood of abuse and neglect can truly comprehend the effects these have on children. Children
coming from these environments are studied ad nauseum by sociologists and psychologists alike in an effort to understand what theyve suffered, how it affects them behaviorally, and what the long-term
consequences of their environments is going to be; however, as someone once said many years ago, "No one can judge another mans actions until hes walked in his shoes." Be
that as it may, the only thing anyone can know for a certainty is that each and every one of us learns our life skills from our parents and teachers.
