States. At the time, Russia was a power to reckon with and then it evolved and softened. It went from a repressive society in the Stalin era to a
more open society. In fact, its "repressive political regime" began with the start of the Soviet state and really did persist to its final collapse (Oyzerman, 2003). The regime
has been associated with Lenin and would continue to be organized and also carried through his disciple Joseph Stalin (2003). Stalinism is something that would be equated with the
phrase "unprecedented cruel dictatorship" and Stalin was thought to be much the same, being implicated in many criminal acts (2003). He would struggle against the future for
the sake of communism. At the same time, Stalin is also said to have been a different leader than the other communist Russians as he had taken things a bit
too far. The culture at the time was extremely repressive. A sign of a repressive state is when the people are not able to speak their minds. The people are
not able to create art and everything creative is censored. Between 1934 and Stalins death in 1953, art went underground (Lee, 1998). Some history is significant here. It should be
noted that after Lenins death in 1924, Stalin tried to establish socialism but clashed with Trotsky, who denied the possibility of socialism inside of Russia until the revolution with
Western Europe ("Stalin," 1998). Stalin won the ideological struggle and by 1936, all opposition was eliminated (1998). During the second World War, Stalin intervened in the military area concerning campaigns
against Nazi Germany (1998). He was able to bring the USSR through the war but also helped it to emerge as a superpower (1998). This was at great human
