changing form a company where BA was seen as short for "bloody Awful" to a world class airline company that has problems but also a good reputation and many quality
awards. However, gaining a good position does not insulate a company from the pressures and the need for change. If we look at BA they have seen many of these
pressures over the last twelve months. The industry is one where there have been ongoing financial pressures the events of several years ago such as the terrorist attack of September
11th 2001, these effects are still being felt with increased security and an industry that is recovering. One of the most visible threats and changes that has been seen
has been the dispute with Gate Gourmet, This was an American company that supplied the on flight meals. The outsourcing of the catering had been a part of a much
earlier cost cutting measure, outsourcing this had allowed BA to focus on the core operation and buy in the food that was needed. The dispute was between Gate Gourmet and
the staff it had supposedly planned to sack by manipulating circumstances so that it could bring in cheap labour (The Times, 2005) The development hit the news as it
grounded many BA flights out of Gatwick and saw the A name brought into the news, despite the fact they were not directly a part of the dispute. Gate Gourmet
argued that to keep the staff they would need BA to re-negotiate the contract with them at a higher cost. The publicity eventually reached the point where BA had to
get involved and volunteered to chair a meeting and act as a mediator. In this we can see a direct application of
