In contrast to this paradigm, transformational leadership has emerged as a leadership paradigm that focuses on collaborative effort and is concerned with the what constitutes the common good, as well as such issues as global concerns global concerns, diversity and pluralism (Rost, 1993). Transformational leadership offers an alternative to traditional management styles in that it uses language that is inclusive rather than controlling (Social policy, 2005). As this suggests, transformational leadership provides a model for business that addresses the overall corporate climate of an organization. Rost (1993) emphasizes the point that the transformational leadership model differs greatly from the coercive, punitive leadership theories of the past that were patterned after military models. Rosts theory, also, emphasizes that leadership is a process that involves all aspects of organizational activity. According to Bryant (2003), transformational leaders are distinguished by possessing the personal characteristic of charisma. However, leaders become truly transformational when they increase awareness of what is right, significant and good (Bass, 1993). Many people see charisma as important to leadership. However, Bass sees the charismatic element of transformational leadership as simply one of four components that make up the transformational leadership model; the others being inspirational leadership, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration (Bryant, 2003). As this suggests, Bass sees charisma as simply a component of transformational leadership rather than as its defining characteristic. This is because an individual can possess charisma without also possessing the intellectual capabilities that are also essential to this leadership model.
