is managed well the organization will move forward, benefiting from the change. For a change to be successful it is necessary for the organization to consider and manage the human
aspects as well as the operations or tangible aspects of the change. Where employees do not support the change; for example they do not understand it or believe it is
needed, they are likely to resist. These were some of the issues faced by the Concorde Bookshop, which resulted in problems in the change. Change can be managed as
a logical process, with several stages that need to be traversed in order for the change to be successful; failure to complete these stages led to Concordes problems.
There are a number of models which may be used, but they all have common features; the need to gain the support and commitment
of the employees so that they understand why the change in needed. In Lewins three stage model this is the first stage referred to as unfreezing (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007).
The second stage is the change itself, with the last stage being the action needed to entrench the change and ensure it is maintained (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). These are
broad stages Kotter has a more detailed change model, where the same process is seen, but undertaken with 8 stages; creating a sense of urgency, forming a powerful coalition, creating
a vision for the change, communicate the vision, remove obstacles, create short term wins, build on the change and anchor the changes in the corporate culture (Stam, 2010).
