younger and more affluent markets, these are the markets that the luxury brands such as Chanel are aligned with (Dodes and Schechner, 2009). However despite some rhetoric Chanel still has
some rather poor practices. The manufacturing of goods all takes place in Paris, this means that the goods then need to be transported. In some areas, such as Australia
where Channel repackage the sun care range, there is waste created from the packaging needs, as the goods are sent in their original packaging and may need to be
repacked to meet local labelling requirements (Chanel Australia, 2007). However, where possible the goods are transported by sea, with an allowance of a lead time from ordering to arrival
of three months as the goods are sent by sea which may be seen as having an impact on the environment, but it is a more effective form of transport
than sending the goods by air or by road. There are many areas where this is not possible, and goods are sent by road. There is a general slow
but gradual move towards the use of recycled and recyclable packaging, there are also measures to reduce waste by reducing use, and where waste is incur minimising the levels and
reusing or recycling what is possible form the use of energy management plans to the development of tighter inventory controls. This leads onto sustainability issue; with the way that
