2010). Its even possible for a writer to plagiarize himself, if he uses prior work of his own but doesnt quote it (Kopf, 2010). Thats because once an author has
published a work, the content belongs to the publisher (Kopf, 2010). "If writers wish to reuse published content, they must properly cite what now belongs to another entity" (Kopf, 2010).
There are several reasons why plagiarism is unethical. First, reproducing anothers words without crediting them for the original material is "a form of theft" (Kopf, 2010). Even though the theft
here is that of an idea, known as "intellectual property," it is still wrong (Kopf, 2010). Second, the plagiarist is the one who benefits from his unethical act: he may
win praise for work he didnt do, or even earn better grades by stealing someone elses work (Kopf, 2010). But there more at stake here than a GPA: plagiarizing someones
work and passing it off as ones own may make the thief an "expert" on the subject in the minds of others, thus conferring "significant authority" on the plagiarist (Kopf,
2010). Having backed themselves into a corner by stealing the work in the first place, the plagiarist may then go on to offer an opinion on a subject about which
he knows nothing; if that happens to be a field like medicine, for instance, he could put lives at risk (Kopf, 2010). A third consideration is very simple: when
