of their demise, and recent reports of deserted libraries, the truth is that people are using American libraries more than ever before (Demas & Scherer, 2002). It is true
that perhaps people no longer read as much as they once did, but todays libraries offer more than books. Many libraries have sections of video tapes, audio tapes, computer
software and a multitude of newspapers and magazines. Many people love to wander through libraries and today, these organizations truly represent the needs of a community that no longer reads
as it used to, but still needs access to quality information. The world of multimedia has opened doors for many, and communities needs vary in respect to ethnic diversity as
well as diversity in terms of types of materials desired. Today, electronic media is utilized for both academic research and for patrons who merely want to learn how to make
use of the personal computer. Perhaps the most significant challenges facing libraries today are issues pertinent to diversity, the storage and dissemination of electronic media and the issues pertinent
to the defense of intellectual freedom. These are challenges that libraries are confronting now, and will face as the twenty-first century unfolds. Libraries need to respond to those challenges by
initiating programs that will cater to the needs of present and future users, in accordance with recommendations created by the American Library Association. II. Diversity Management concerns
in respect to the creation and maintenance of a culturally diverse workforce in academic libraries are examined in an article and the path on which higher education must continue is
