One of the major issues is the change in the labor market conditions; the workforce and potential employees are more educated and empowered than at any point in the past, in some areas of commerce there may be labor shortages and the way employees are expected to contribute in a more inclusive manner, with psychological and emotional labor as well as physical and intellectual labor. At the same time employees also need more than wages, issues such as recognition and job satisfaction were recognized as early as Mayos Hawthorne studies, which indicated the importance of the employment relationship in terms of motivation and in the modern context with increasing levels of job mobility motivation is not only limited to productivity issues, it is also linked to retention of employees. The main challenge of all of these issues to the employer and human relations management is how to satisfy both employees at the same time as achieving the employers needs of increasing or maintaining high levels of productivity and creating an acceptable profit. When considering the challenges faced by human relations management in the twenty first century there are a number of issues that could be considered when considering the changes in the labour market in conjunction with changing market needs. Issues could include the issues of employee motivation in the context of a higher level of employee knowledge and education and a need to retain as well as motivate employees. The workforce is also becoming increasing diverse and there is a very active approach to preventing and tackling discrimination in the workplace which makes managing diversity important.
