The British Empire is one of the greatest and most widespread the world has ever seen, and India was referred to as the "Jewel in the Crown," meaning it was
the most important and valuable of all the British colonies. A British possession since the 1760s, India supplied cotton, cheap labor, and was a market for British goods. But the
British rule in India was oppressive, and strict, and like most colonizers, the British felt superior to the natives. This is not unusual, and in fact is one of the
reactions that is usually mentioned when colonization is discussed, and so it deserves a short examination. The colonizing power, no matter who it is, comes to the country it intends
to colonize because that country has something that the "mother" country needs; the Spanish in the New Work, for instance, were looking for gold. But in order to feel comfortable
with colonization, which is another word for looting, or taking the colonys raw materials, it is necessary for the colonizing power to feel good about what it is doing. The
excuse is often that the colonizers are there to "save" the natives by introducing them to Christianity, or to "educate" them; in all cases, the stance the colonizing power takes
is that they are superior, they know whats best for the natives better than the natives themselves do, and that therefore have a duty to help these poor, backward people.
