prosperous organization. Yet, it has faced some challenges as have all firms, particularly in todays shaky economy. While Lockheed is associated with government, and there is much controversy there, it is a firm that has kept its reputation rather clean. Its management style is something that some believe needs to be altered, but the firm had fared rather well. Lockheed Martin uses a centralized approach to management but it does allow some units to retain their former cultures (Henning, 2006). A good example is Loral SSRC; it was an entity that folded and its services were scattered throughout Lockheed Martin (Henning, 2006). As large as Lockheed gets, it does allow for individual development amongst acquisitions and it also has expanded a great deal, synthesizing the dominant culture with the Lockheed Martin approach. Lockheed Martin has fared well, despite facing environmental challenges. Of course, most organizations do grapple with various issues such as the economy, the social environment, and the technological environment. There is a great deal of competition, but Lockheed has seemingly stayed the course. II. Lockheed Martin Lockheed Martin is a firm started by three brothers in California in 1900 (Kane, 2002). Today, it is a well-known and important firm. It experienced rapid growth during the 1950s (Kane, 2002). The company is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland and is considered to be a global security firm, and is engaged in design, research, manufacture, development, integration and the sustenance of advanced technology ("Lockheed Martin," 2009). Robert J. Stevens is the current Chairman, President and CEO of the firm ("Lockheed Martin," 2009).
