only for those who deal directly with living patients, but those who undertake other supportive tasks, such as in the pathology labs. As the medical environment changes, so do the
jobs of those who work within it. The challenges faced by any passion will also reflect the general environment within the National Health Service (NHS) where the consideration is a
London teaching hospital, where issues may include administrative and efficiency based issues as much as practical issues. The pathology department and histopathology in particular may be considered in terms of
the potential impacts of challenges, opportunities and threats. The issue with the future is that it is unknown, but there are some elements that may be predicted with some
degree of accuracy. There is little doubt that the job is changing, the environment within which pathology is taking place has changed; the current concern over a swine flu epidemic
has shown the increased pressure that laboratories may be out under, with public and professional pressures to increase speed of results testing as well as retaining accuracy. The epidemic may
not reach the levels that have been speculated, but concern regarding the potential of any type of pandemic is increasing due to many environmental factors, the rate of transfer across
the globe is facilitated by global transportation systems and increased travel. The challenges may be to deal with increased demand if and when the next pandemic occurs as well as
