in Attitude Teachers in Chugach School District have to change their attitudes about a lot of things. Their salary is different, for one thing. It is not based on tenure
and college credits. It is based on merit and performance. In terms of teaching, this school district has their own set of standards and each student is expected to reach
those standards. Students are not rated on the Carnegie rating scale because the district wants students to actually learn the material and to be able to use what they have
learned (Baldrige, 2001). This is a very different structure for a high school. While most high school in the U.S. have four or five major subject areas that must
be mastered, Chugach has ten: mathematics, science, technology, reading, writing, social sciences, service learning, career development, cultural awareness and expression, and personal/ social/health development. Progress is monitored through Individual Learning
Plans, Student Assessment Binders, Student Learning Profiles, and Student Life skills Portfolios which contain support and documentation for each student progress (Baldrige, 2001). Student learning is flexible. They know what
they need to do to achieved proficiency in each of the ten areas. Some might complete the requirements and master the material in four yeas while others may need six
years. The Individualized Learning Plans tell students their areas of strength and weakness (Baldrige, 2001). This means sometimes they may be helping other students to learn and sometimes other students
