But, when Cesar was only ten his father made a poor business decision and the family lost all they owned. That, in combination with the later stock market crash, caused the family to be in a position where they became migrant workers, like much of the land owners in the country at the time. "In 1944, he joined the United States Navy. At the end of his tour of duty, he returned to California to work in the fields" (Anonymous Cesar E. Chavezs Biography, 2002; cesarbio5-12.htm). He married a woman who shared his social ideals and together they "began teaching the Mexican farm workers to read and write so they could take the test to become American citizens. They hoped that, as citizens, their fellow farm workers would be less afraid to join Cesar in his efforts to improve working conditions" (Anonymous Cesar E. Chavezs Biography, 2002; cesarbio5-12.htm). The Community Service Organization recruited Chavez and as such he worked picking fruit in the daytime and "In the evening, he organized farm workers to register to vote. He was so successful that he registered more than 2,000 workers in just two months" (Anonymous Cesar E. Chavezs Biography, 2002; cesarbio5-12.htm). However, as a result he lost his job in the fields at which time he went to work for the organization full time.
