foundation of mental illness. In ancient times the assumption was made that some form of an evil spirit was responsible for such problems. In more recent times, the premise of
an evil spirit has been replaced with the idea that it is possible for somebody to be mentally ill, just as it is possible to contract a disease or develop
some sort of condition that has little, if anything, to do with a persons attitudes or beliefs and everything to do with their physiology. Nonetheless, the "disorder" of substance abuse
has been looked upon as being a moral flaw, a sign of weakness, or the result of social conditions which are beyond the understanding and reach of "normal" people. The
same holds true for "normal" rehabilitation programs. If there is not a clear understanding of what it is that a person is being rehabilitated from, there is less likelihood of
a positive outcome. However, in the past twenty to thirty years, a greater understanding of the nature of substance abuse both in terms of its pathology and its treatment
has led to a greater emphasis on the professionalization of the people who work with and treat clients with substance abuse problems. In many circumstances, the punitive nature of those
dealing with addicts of all types has changed toward an awareness that there are issues to be considered that move far beyond human weakness or criminal behavior. Members of the
