Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, Georgia (CDC, History, 2008), CDC operates under the Department of Health and Human Services (CDC, Organization, 2008). The name is plural because the CDC itself
is comprised of several different centers, offices and agencies, including the Office of the Director, six coordinating centers and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC, Organization, 2008).
The Coordinating Centers are: (each prefaced with "Coordinating Center for": Environmental Health and Injury Prevention; Health Information and Service; Health Promotion; Infectious Diseases; the Coordinating Office for Global Health; and
the Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (CDC, Organization, 2008). Each Center or Office includes other centers or offices for specific things. For instance the Coordinating Center for
Health Promotion is comprised of the Office for Genomics and Disease Prevention and the National Center on Birth Defects and Disabilities (CDC, Organization, 2008). In addition to managing the activities
of the CDC, the Office of the Director provides overall coordination, leadership and direction for the programs (CDC, Organization, 2008). Several offices come under the Office of the Director, including:
CDC Washington, Office of Chief of Public Health Practice, Office of Health and Safety, Office of Strategy and Innovation, and Office of the Chief Science Officer (CDC, Organization, 2008). Each
