work of Toni Morrison. There is controversy over rating video games and rating music so that people know if there may be offensive material within. There is clear censorship in
television as well, evidenced by what types of shows can be shown during and before primetime, and evidenced by the type of language and types of images that can be
seen on television. The following paper provides a look at the history of censorship, discusses television censorship and then illustrates why television censoring is important to uphold because of children.
Censorship: History Censorship is likely as old as humanity. "In ancient societies, such as those of Israel or China, censorship was
considered a legitimate instrument for regulating the moral and political life of the population" (Newth). There have always been things that are acceptable by a societys standards and things that
are not acceptable. For example, "The most famous case of censorship in ancient times is that of Socrates, sentenced to drink poison in 399 BC for his corruption of youth
and his acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities" (Newth). In essence, all peoples, all nations, all cultures, have some form of censorship that is
generally considered to be the voice of the majority. That voice of majority addresses the concerns of the public. If the public allowed anything and everything then there would be
no censorship but in all societies people believe some things are good and others bad and as such censorship has always been a part of all societies.
