but according to 2001 statistics, there were 129 million people who used cellular phones in the United States, with more than 400 million users worldwide (Ebersole, 2003; Dial M for
Municipal Waste). The uses for cellular phones are numerous. They can be a lifesaver in a vehicular emergency; they can instantly connect you with business associates or family
members no matter where they might be; and nothing better represents freedom in the high-tech twenty-first century universe than the ability "to talk anytime, anywhere" (Ebersole, 2003, p. 14).
With so many pros, it is difficult to imagine that this convenient piece of electronic hardware could have any cons. But
unfortunately, much of modern technology is dispensable, and cellular phones are no exception. Cellular phone models practically become obsolete as soon as they are placed upon store shelves.
In addition, people change cell phone companies at will, which means the previously used cell phone is no longer needed. According to the Sierra Club, Americas oldest environmental organization,
more than 1 million cellular phones are being disposed of as a result of upgrading phones or switching companies (Hodel, 2003). Furthermore, statistical data compiled by the national research
environmental organization INFORM predicts that by the year 2005, approximately 130 million cellular phones "will be discarded every year in the United States" (Dial M for Municipal Waste, 2003).
INFORM senior fellow Bette Fishbein offers, "Because these devices are so small, their environmental impacts might appear to be minimal... But the growth in their use has been so enormous
