also examines the cells and phones offered. Discussion The first cell phone was introduced in 1973; it was the Motorola Dyna-Tac invented by Martin Cooper (Marples, 2004). The phone was
9 x 5 x 1.75 inches and it weight 2.5 pounds (Marples, 2004). It also cost $3,500! (Marples, 2004). Obviously at that price it was beyond most peoples pocketbooks, but
within seven years "there were a million subscribers in the United States" (Marples, 2004). Today some cell phones weigh less than 3 ounces, and there are now more people with
wireless systems than there are people with traditional landlines (Marples, 2004). As to an overview of phones and plans available, its impossible to be comprehensive in a paper this short
because there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of phone available, as well as different plans to support them. In many cases, the phones are free when the subscriber signs
up with the provider. According to one source, the largest mobile phone company in the world, not surprisingly, is China Mobile, with 158.6 million subscribers (Largest mobile phone companies,
2006). In the U.S., the three largest companies by number of subscribers are: Cingular (50.0 million); Verizon Wireless (44 million) and Sprint PCS3 (22.2 million) (Largest mobile phone companies, 2006).
Because there are so many plans and phones available, well look just at Cingular to get an idea of what the industry is like. Cingular Wireless is now AT&T, the
telecommunications giant that seems to continually reinvent itself. At any rate, they offer numerous devices including phones, PDAs and PC cards to help connect to the Internet (Cell phones and
devices, 2008). Phones include "smartphones," camera phones, blackberries and the "go phone" as well as cell phones, including used cell phones (Cell phones and devices, 2008). Narrowing the search down,
