driving a car safely (Brace, Young & Regan, 2008; Horey & Wickens, 2006; Just, Keller & Cynkar, 2008). The most recent and what seems to be the most dangerous activity
is texting while driving for the obvious reasons - the driver is looking at the phone rather than at the road. Wilson and Stimpson (2010) reported that drivers who text
while driving are 23 times more likely to have an accident and that texting was directly related to 16,000 accident fatalities between 2001 and 2007. Just, Keller, and Cynkar (2008)
conducted a study that used functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine the differences in brain activity. Participants steered a vehicle along a curving virtual road and listened to sentences that
they were to determine were true of false. The investigators found that the parietal lobe activity, which is involved in spatial processing, decreased by 37 percent. Listening comprehension took away
the mental resources the driver needed to drive safely (Just, Keller & Cynkar, 2008). In this experiment, the driver did not need to hold the phone and would occur even
if talking with someone in the car and not on the phone. A meta-analysis by Brace, Young, and Regan (2007) found that talking on a cell phone even using
hands-free equipment can distract drivers cognitively as well as physically and visually. Research suggests there is a four-fold increase in vehicular accident risk when mobile phones are being used. This
activity even with hands-free operation can impair the drivers decision-making processes as well as reaction times (Brace, Young & Regan, 2007). Collett, Guillot, and Petit (2010) reached the same conclusions
