by specific binary patterns. In one respect, cellular technology is leaps and bounds away from the old two cans and a string trick still utilized by children to carry
their voice from one location to another. In another respect, however, the principles of the transmission of the voice from point A to point B still revolve around some
very basic concepts and is limited by some very antiquated governmental policies. Cellular phone technology utilizes these basic concepts but it also depends on more advanced concepts. Often
times it is very small changes in technology which presents certain paradigms to businesses. This is no less true in cellular phone technology. The change in the binary
patterns that have occurred has resulted in tremendous changes in cell phone function and functionality. It must first be acknowledged that the concepts
of voice transmission have changed very little over time. It is the small changes today, however, which make or break a company in the fast-paced world of cellular telephones.
To understand these small aspects of the picture, however, it is first necessary to understand the gross aspects. The human voice is composed of sine waves, each of
which has amplitude, frequency, and phase (Stern and Mazella, 1996). Amplitude is the waves value at a particular moment, frequency is how often the wave is repeated per second,
and phase concerns the delay involved from some reference time. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) (Stern and Mazella, 1996). At one time telephone transmissions relayed only
a portion of the full spectrum of the voice and the frequency spectrum alike. Consequently the quality of the transmission left much to be desired.
