we know them today are the brainchild of Martin Cooper, who was working at Motorola in the late 1960s (Shiels, 2003). At that time, AT&T had a monopoly on phone
service in the U.S., and "they had invented this thing called cellular" (Shiels, 2003). But in their case, what AT&T had come up with were car phones, and Cooper believed
that people "didnt want to talk to cars ... [they] wanted to talk to other people" (Shiels, 2003). And so Motorola set out to make a "cellular telephone, a personal
telephone" (Shiels, 2003). They succeeded, of course, although the phone that Cooper made the first call on in 1973 weighed almost two pounds and cost $3,500 (Shiels, 2003). Today the
phones are smaller than a pack of cards and weigh at most a few ounces. The theory behind cell phone operation is simple, but getting it to work properly is
extremely difficult. Farley and van der Hoek do a fantastic job of explaining the way cell phones work; their article is lengthy but truly comprehensive, and its the reference for
most of this paper. They begin by using a graphical representation of how cellular areas work. Rather than using circles, they use hexagons to represent the "geographical area covered by
cellular radio antennas" (Farley and van der Hoek, 2006). Such an area is called a cell. There are gaps in the coverage in any cell, but the hexagon makes it
