society in the early twentieth century. Their stories of hardship and struggle are told through and seen through the eyes and correspondence of Celie, and span from the early 1900s until the 1940s. Like her female counterparts, Celie is forced to submit to vicious sexual assaults at the hands of men. First, there was her father Alfonso (later revealed to be her stepfather), to whom Celie would submit to the abuse in part to spare her mother and sister from similar violence, but also because she had little or no self-esteem. Later, history would repeat itself with Albert, the man she was given away in marriage in a manner mirroring the way in which the slave is turned over to the master. In fact, the way in which Celie refers to Albert throughout the novel, as Mister, sounds eerily like "Master." The beatings were simply a matter of showing Celie who was boss, would recall: "Sometime beat me... whether I do what he say or not... Harpo ast his daddy why he beat me. Mister say, Cause she my wife" (Walker 66, 23). Unfortunately, Celies lowly status as a poor, black, female was also shared by her contemporaries. These women will weave a rich fabric of friendship, which is symbolically referred to in the novel through the female activities of sewing and quilting, which will serve as the primary fabric of their mutual support system. Celie formed a close kinship with Shug Avery, an independent-minded blues singer who, ironically, was Alberts mistress. But when Shug learned of Alberts domestic violence, she immediately dismissed him from her life, and encouraged Celie to leave him. Shug provided her with emotional and financial support, assisting in the establishment of Celies sewing business. ...
