A 7 page essay that contrasts and compares the rhetorical style used by Ann Causey in her essay "Is Hunting Ethical?" and Edward Abbey in "The Cowboy and His Cow." Analysis of Causey's position shows that she primarily presents arguments based on logos, that is, an "appeal based on logic or reason," while Abbey's are largely characterized by pathos, that is, an "appeal based on emotion" (Crewell, Draper and Mitchell). both essays. Both Causey and Abbey begin their essays by presenting personal information that establishes their authority to speak on their topic, and, in both cases, these narratives can,
therefore, be regarded as utilizing ethos, that is, an "appeal based on the character of the speaker" (Crewell, Draper and Mitchell). Causey describes the intense efforts of herself and her
husband to intense efforts to revive a fawn that was part of the "deer nutrition and growth study" that her husband was conducting (Causey 138). As this suggests, Causeys
description substantiates Causeys claim to having a deep respect for life and nature. This personal narrative also includes the fact that Causey and her husband "wiped away our tears, cleaned
up" and went to a dinner, where their contribution was a venison roast, which introduces the seeming contradiction of hunters as devout and ethical naturalists (Causey 139). In a
similar manner, Abbey also begins his essay by presenting an ethos narrative that establishes his credibility to write about raising cattle by grazing them for free on public lands. He
