far-reaching subject, and we cant cover it all in this brief paper. Lets look at just some of the reasons for the failure of communism. Well start with
economics. Communism in its purest form is truly an ideal society: everyone is equal, and people share what they have so that no one wants for basic necessities.
Its a system based on a noble idea and could only work if mankind was truly selfless. But human nature gets in the way; people want more things, more
money, a better life; competition rises, and the egalitarian society becomes only a dream. The Soviet Union as we know it was born in the Revolution of 1917;
although it took years for the country to establish itself as a Communist nation, it was a fully functioning entity relatively quickly. It fought with America during WWII, and
then turned against the U.S. to become an implacable enemy, leading to the Cold War. It seemed powerful, impregnable and frightening; then it vanished, having lasted less than 80
years. Why? "In 1961 the first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, made a speech predicting that within 10 years the Soviet Union would
overtake America in total industrial production and within 25 years it would outstrip its rival in wealth per head of population" (Dechaumont, 2004). At the time Khrushchev made
