life, as it killed approximately twice the number of people who had died in all the previous wars of the last several centuries combined (Cashman and Robinson 27). Ferguson, in
a 1999 study, estimates that, roughly, the death toll for WWI was 9.45 million, which includes those who died from concomitant illness (Cashman and Robinson 27). Richard Hamilton and
Holger Herwig consider this figure to understated, as they argue that it does not consider either civilian deaths or the deaths suffered by the smaller countries. Therefore, they place the
death toll as roughly 14.6 million (Hamilton and Herwig 3) A constructivist approach to international politics describes war as a "social construction," which is supported by specific "attitudes, beliefs and
