"What happened?" This is not too far removed from the analysis of the origins of war. Waltz (1965) and Tuchman (1997) both ask, "What happened?" and then set
about answering their own questions. Waltz (1965) presents three "images" that he says can be seen as being instrumental in causing war.
They are International Conflict and Human Behavior; International Conflict and the Internal Structure of States; and International Conflict and International Anarchy. All can be seen as being instrumental in

These two images are important as well, of course, and each can be seen as contributing to specific wars in the past. Of
those poor souls afflicted with delusions of grandeur and superficial superiority, we often say they are suffering from a Napoleon complex. There have been many over the course of
history who have sought to elevate themselves by conquering others, including not only Napoleon, but also Hitler, Genghis Khan, Ivan the Terrible, Attila the Hun and a host of others.
Human behavior certainly plays a role in causing war, and did in World War I. Tuchman (1994) writes that as early as 1910, Germanys Kaiser William was infuriated
that his treaty with Czar Nicholas lasted only as long as it took Nicholas to return to Russia from their meeting in Finland (9).
